Physical and Chemical Properties:

Propionic acid is a liquid with a pungent and unpleasant smell somewhat resembling body odor. Propionic acid has physical properties intermediate between those of the smaller carboxylic acids, formic and acetic acids, and the larger fatty acids. Propionic acid displays the general properties of carboxylic acids: it can form amide, ester, anhydride, and chloride derivatives.

Application:

  1. some propionic acid produced is consumed as a preservativefor both animal feed and food for human consumption.
  2. Propionic acidis as a preservative in baked goods, which use the sodium and calcium
  3. As a food additive.
  4. Propionic acid is also useful as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals, especially polymers.
  5. The estersof propionic acid have fruit-like odors and are sometimes used as solvents or artificial flavorings.
  6. In production of the Jarlsberg cheesea propionic acid bacteria is used to give both taste and holes.

Storage:

Store in a cool and ventilated warehouse. Keep away from sparks and heat sources. The temperature of the warehouse should not exceed 30 ℃. Keep the container sealed. It should be stored separately from oxidants, reducing agents, and alkalis, and should not be mixed for storage. Using explosion-proof lighting and ventilation facilities.
