Physical and Chemical Properties

Potassium nitrate is a chemical compound with a sharp, salty, bitter taste and the chemical formula KNO3. It is an ionic salt of potassium ions K+ and nitrate ions NO3−, and is therefore an alkali metal nitrate.It occurs in nature as a mineral niter.

Application

  • Major uses of potassium nitrate are in fertilizers, tree stump removal, rocket propellantsand fireworks. It is also one of the major constituents of gunpowder (black powder).
  • In processing meat, potassium nitrate reactswith hemoglobin and myoglobin generating a red color.
  • Potassium nitrate largely as a source of nitrate.
  • potassium nitrate isas the oxidizer in blackpowder.
  • Used in some toothpastesfor sensitive teeth.
  • Combats high blood pressure and was once used as a hypotensive.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry, and well ventilated warehouse. Keep away from sparks and heat sources. The temperature of the warehouse shall not exceed 30 ℃, and the relative humidity shall not exceed 80%.
